Men are twice as likely as women to not protect their skin in the sun, despite more men dying from melanoma than women, according to research due to be released at the British Association of Dermatologists annual conference in Glasgow next month.

The shocking survey of 1213 adults formed part of the Northern Ireland Omnibus Survey published in September 2008, a regular survey of the lifestyle and views of the people of Northern Ireland*.

It also found that people in their teens and early twenties are less likely than any other age group to use sun protection, despite increasing numbers of melanoma being diagnosed in this age group.

One in ten people surveyed (10%) take no protective measures at all against sun exposure (compared to 8% in 2000).

Everyday Oily Skin Treatments

Do you have oily skin?  If you’re not sure, check whether your skin exhibits the following features:

  • large pores
  • regular acne breakouts (including blackheads and whiteheads)
  • shiny skin surface
  • acne breakouts on other areas of the body, including the back, chest and shoulders

For some people, oily skin is a temporary condition.  Many grow out of it, no longer requiring oily skin treatments, as soon as their teenage years pass, while most eventually find it gone by the time they’re in their early twenties.  There are others, though, for whom the affliction remains well into their later years.

When you have oily skin, taking care of your skin is paramount, as many behaviors resulting from the condition can actually aggravate skin problems.  To make sure you’re looking after your oily skin the right way, be sure to follow these oily skin treatment guidelines:

1. If you have acne, avoid picking on it.  Doing so only brings more bacteria to your face, leaving it worse for wear.

2. Use blotting sheets as your oily skin treatment to reduce excess shine.  Be careful about using it when not needed, though - you don’t want to strip your skin dry of necessary moisture.

3. When cleaning your face, always prefer an alcohol-free, gel-based oily skin treatment wash.

4. Even those with oily skin can use a moisturizer, especially one with at least SPF 15 sun protection.  Just make sure to get one specifically intended as an oily skin treatment.

Use Sunscreen To Avoid Sun Damaged Skin

If you want to avoid sun damaged skin, using sunscreen regularly should be a major part of your comprehensive sun protection, which include wearing protective clothing and staying out of the sun at its worst times.  While not the end-all and be-all of sun damaged skin prevention, their use will help you keep off many situations you’ll otherwise fall victim to.

Blocking UV Radiation

Sunscreens facilitate their effects by the use of sun-blocking materials that keep UV rays from reaching your skin.  Some sunscreens will contain minerals like zinc oxide and titanium oxide, which reflects the UV radiation away from your skin.  Others will contain what are called chemical blockers, which absorb the UV lights and keeps it on the sunscreen, without ever reaching your skin.  With UV rays unable to touch you, sun damaged skin is usually avoided.

Safety

Since physical blockers (as opposed to chemical blockers) like zinc oxide and titanium oxide don’t dissolve into the skin, they are generally considered safer.  However, pretty much any sunscreen in the market has gone through rigorous testing and are likely to have passed high safety standards.

The problem with physical blocker-based sunscreens is they do tend to rub off, making regular application necessary.   If you stay for long hours under the sun, chances are you’ll have to pack a sunscreen with you so you can apply them at various times throughout the day to effectively avoid sun damaged skin.
